December 30-31, 2006

In this week’s installment of my Messages About Purpose and Strategy, I will answer the question, “Who does what around here?” I know there are often questions about specific responsibilities, but I’ll leave that explanation for a different time. For now, I just want to concentrate on one grand idea: church members are the actual ministers and pastors serve as their equippers. Paul wrote in Eph. 4:11-12, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ....”

You may have heard the old 20/80 rule. That is, 20 percent of the people do 80 percent of the work. This is how life works in some families, many businesses, and most churches. In other words, the majority is spectating while the minority is sweating.

It seems like most people still picture pastors as the paid professionals. They are the only ones who are supposed to be working. Evangelism is sometimes seen like those crazy TV stunts – you know, “Don’t try this at home!”

The fact is, sharing the good news of Christ is the responsibility of every believer. To start off this new year we will be providing some solid training in evangelism in order to “equip the saints for the work of the ministry.”

I want each Dayspring attender to adopt a “each one reach one” mentaility this year. We’ll all do our best to glorify God by making disciples.
