December 23 & 24, 2006

In this week’s installment of my Messages About Purpose and Strategy, will say something about bridges. The Willamette River has already risen to near flood stage twice this winter. Back on Jan 1 of 2006, it was the highest it has been since the whopper flood of ‘96. I kayaked all through the proposed Keizer Rapids Park that day. About 80 of the 121 acres were under water. Even the modest flow of the river on an average winter day is pretty impressive. You would not want to attempt to cross over without a bridge. Well, there is the ferry up at Wheatland, but even it stops operation when the level gets too high. So, to get to the other side, the bridge downtown is a necessity.

Bridges are needed in evangelism as well. If you want to get anywhere, you need to cross over. Don’t attempt to just barge into trouble. It won’t work; you’ll sink.

I see this Christmas season as a bridge. People are much more open to talking about Jesus than usual. It is painless to cross over when you use a connection like Christmas music, traditions, and so on. Thinking strategically means considering the best way to accomplish your ends, given the prevailing situation. It’s Christmas time. Everywhere you go people are faced with features reminding them of the coming of Christ. Even many non-Christians are appalled with the commercialism and materialism. Ask them about the real meaning of Christmas. Listen and share. See what happens when you cross over and bring the cross over!
