March 3 & 4, 2007

In this week’s installment of my Messages About Purpose and Strategy I will reveal the meaning of our church’s name. What is a dayspring? The word simply means the first light of day. It can refer to the actual light, the time of the sun’s rising, and/or the place on the horizon where it first appears.

Our name was chosen with a Bible reference in mind. Near the end of Luke 1, Zechariah, John the Baptist’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit to prophesy. Let me share this text with you from the New King James Version:

Luke 1:76-79 “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Other versions translate using synonyms like the rising sun, light from heaven, and sunshine.

Consider the significance of this name. Our church is to announce the dawn of a new day. The light of God is to shine through our lives into the community. That is exciting! I want to experience a dayspring at Dayspring. Let’s radiate his glory and thus fulfill our call to honor God by leading people to follow Christ.

Yours, Larry
