MARCH 24 & 25, 2007

In today’s installment of my Messages About Purpose and Strategy, I want to make a statement about grace. When I use this term, I’m thinking of the definition, “God’s unmerited favor.” Picture receiving grace as being treated like you don’t deserve.

My comments in this weekly article usually have to do with either our purpose as a church or the strategies we employ to fulfill that purpose. In other words, I write about why we exist (what we are trying to do), or how we are seeking to reach the goal. But grace is tied into our purpose and our strategies. C.S. Lewis argued that grace is the single distinctive feature of the Christian faith. Grace makes us unique.

It is the best that we have to offer, and yet so many churches do not extend grace to those who need it. Maybe we see so little grace offered because so few people have received it. God has graciously called us to himself to receive forgiveness and filling. And God has called us to extend this same grace to others. Grace explains the why, what, and how of our ministry here. At Dayspring, we must continue to grow as people of grace, people of God.
