APRIL 5 & 6, 2008
In this week's installment of my Messages About Purpose and Strategy, I'll describe why you may see me limping this week (there is a leadership lesson hiding here in my explanation).
I had arthroscopic knee surgery on Wednesday. The funny thing about the surgery, if there is one, is that my knee didn't hurt much. It was not particularly more painful than other joints in my body. But I had it done because of what the doctor told me. He basically said, "Your shoulders are beyond repair, but we can do something about that knee. You're too young to have total shoulder replacements, although you need them. But that knee can easily be improved with a fairly simple surgery."
When he explained things this way, I thought about our church. There are a variety of things I'd like to see done, fixed, changed, etc. Which projects should I work on? Some of the goals are easier to reach than others. Some of what I want for Dayspring will take lots of time and effort. We may have to be patient and do the best we can while we wait and pray. But other changes are easier to implement.
I guess the lesson is something like this: Do what you can do and make do with the rest! So, think about what you can do and do it! Don't worry about the things you can't fix, just be proactive and take initiative in the things you can do. I did. And that is why I'm limping. But I'll be running again soon.
