August 30 & 31
Last week I wrote my Message About Purpose and Strategy on the method of multiplication in the ministry of discipleship. Driven by a phrase in 2 Timothy 2:2, I imagined aloud what could happen if each one of us would just reach one person for Christ.
In order to further illustrate the power of spiritual multiplication, I want you to picture a display in a Chicago museum. It featured a checkerboard with one grain of wheat on the first square, 2 on the second, 4 on the third. The number of grains doubled on each square: 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and so on until there was grain spilling over into the surrounding squares. A sign above the board asked this question. "At this rate of doubling every square, how much grain would you have on the board by the 64th square?" The answer was flashed on a screen above when a button was pushed. "Enough to cover the entire subcontinent of India 50 feet deep!"
What would happen if you made an investment of your Christianity in the life of one other person this year? Picture the results of each one of us just reaching one other person and then training that new believer to reproduce as well. Let's each invest in the next generation and see what God will do with our faithful service.
