January 29 & 30, 2011

I drove to the office through thick fog on Wednesday morning. I had been looking out the window noticing it from home and I even saw that there was a weather advisory posted on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s weather service forecast for the Willamette Valley. It was one seriously thick fog bank, blanketing our region. I got to thinking about the fog allegorically and we ended up talking about it in our staff meeting that morning.

In this week’s Message About Purpose and Strategy, I’ll fill you in on the conversation. First we talked about actual fog. People told stories about being in so deep that they couldn’t see where they were going. Some of the accounts were funny, others were plain scary! Then we talked about fog as an analogy for being unable to see what is ahead. It provides a vivid picture of that helpless feeling of being lost and unable to discern your direction. To be stuck in the fog leads some people to simply cease movement entirely. They stop until they can get their bearings. Others wander. Finally, we talked about FOG as an acronym. When you are unable to find your way, when your destination is not in plain sight, the answer is to Focus On God, FOG. If things have been a little foggy for you, set your mind on the Lord and he will lead you where you need to go.
